The health of Norway’s 89-year-old King Harald V has deteriorated and is now described by the Royal House as “very serious.” The monarch has been hospitalized at Rikshospitalet in Oslo since August 17.

His initial hospitalization was caused by fluid accumulation, a side effect of cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia. His condition subsequently worsened due to a bacterial infection in his blood. While he has responded to antibiotic treatment, his overall status remains critical.

In response to the situation, Crown Prince Haakon, who is currently acting as regent, and Queen Sonja have canceled all scheduled official engagements. Other members of the royal family, including Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Astrid, have gathered at the hospital to support the King.

The news has prompted several high-profile Norwegian figures to alter their travel plans. Parliament Speaker Masud Gharahkhani interrupted an official visit to Iceland to return home, and the Norwegian College of Bishops canceled a trip to Rome. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also canceled a planned meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Germany, though he remains in Oslo to attend a budget conference.
