Norwegian royal regalia returned to Trondheim

The Norwegian royal regalia, including the crown, scepter, sword, and orb, have been returned to Trondheim following the funeral ceremonies for King Harald. The collection was previously loaned to the Royal Palace to facilitate the solemn ceremonies surrounding the late King’s passing.

Oddmund Hoel, director of the Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Works, and State Administrator Emil Raaen oversaw the handover of the items to the Chief of Court. The transport was conducted under police escort. The regalia, most of which were created for the coronation of Carl IV Johan in 1818, are now back in their permanent location at the National Regalia Exhibition in Erkebispegården.

The items played a central role in the recent royal funeral, appearing in the procession and being placed upon King Harald’s casket. While the regalia are no longer used for coronations following a 1908 parliamentary decision, they remain vital symbols of the Norwegian monarchy and are typically only brought out for signings and royal funerals.
