Norwegian royal son Marius Borg remains in custody amid sexual assault charges

Marius Borg, the 28‑year‑old son of Princess heir Mette‑Marit of Norway, has been charged with multiple sexual offences, including one count of rape with intercourse, two counts of non‑consensual rape and four counts of sexually offensive conduct, along with other charges such as assault and breach of a restraining order. Norwegian police in Oslo have been investigating the case for months, interrogating witnesses and reviewing extensive digital material. Borg, who holds no royal title, has denied the accusations and says he is cooperating with authorities while seeking treatment for substance abuse.

In August he was detained on suspicion of causing bodily injury and property damage, with later arrests in September and November related to the sexual‑assault allegations. Oslo District Court initially ordered his release, citing his mother's serious lung disease and his abstinence from drugs while in custody. However, the Norwegian Prosecutor’s Office lodged an immediate appeal, keeping Borg in preventive detention pending a decision from the Court of Appeal. A final verdict is expected around 15 June, while his mother, Princess Mette‑Marit, prepares for a lung‑transplant operation.
