Norwegian seafood industry protests US 12.5% tariff on its exports
The United States has introduced a 12.5% tariff on Norwegian seafood products, while the European Union continues to apply a 10% rate and the Faroe Islands and Iceland are exempt from the extra charge. Norwegian seafood exports to the United States have fallen sharply, and in June China overtook the United States as Norway’s second‑largest export market after Poland.
Industry leaders warn the higher duty could erode Norway’s market share in the world’s biggest seafood importer. Runar Sivertsen, strategy director at Salmar, said the tariff creates uncertainty and “costs no one” because it raises prices for US consumers. Sverre Søraa, chief executive of Coast Seafood, echoed the concern, noting that the duty threatens the competitiveness of Norwegian salmon and other products.
Norway’s foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, cautioned that further tariff hikes may follow and noted that U.S. authorities are examining countries with alleged “structural overcapacity,” a probe that includes Norway.
