Norwegian Wastewater Plant Deploys Biological Hias Process to Cut Chemical Use

A regional wastewater treatment facility near Hamar, Norway, has implemented the patented Hias Process® developed by Hias IKS and commercialised by Hias How2O. Managing director Anders Enger explains that the system uses natural microbial communities to biologically remove phosphorus and nitrogen, eliminating the need for chemical precipitation. The shift from using roughly 30 tonnes of chemicals per week to a chemical‑free process has reduced operating costs by millions of Norwegian kroner and lowered the plant’s environmental footprint while maintaining high treatment performance.

Since 2020, three treatment lines using the Hias Process® have been operating successfully, demonstrating a more compact, robust, and cost‑efficient approach to wastewater treatment that could be adopted internationally.
