NOS and Padtec announce new telecommunications monitoring solutions

NOS, in partnership with CAPTEMP and FOSSA Satellite, has successfully piloted a hybrid connectivity solution combining 5G and satellite technology. The project aims to ensure continuous monitoring of cargo during maritime transport, particularly for temperature-sensitive goods like pharmaceuticals. During a test voyage between Lisbon and Funchal, the system demonstrated automatic switching between 5G networks in coastal areas and FOSSA Satellite’s nano-satellite constellation in remote high-seas areas. This allows for real-time tracking of temperature and humidity, reducing the risk of economic loss and public health hazards caused by cold chain failures.

Separately, Padtec has launched a new fiber optic network monitoring system. The solution integrates Brazilian-developed hardware with a cloud-based management platform called SmartFiber. Utilizing Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) technology, the system can identify fiber ruptures and locate infrastructure failures. The hardware is designed as a linecard that fits into existing chassis, reducing the need for dedicated monitoring structures. The SmartFiber platform allows operators to associate geographic information with network events to streamline maintenance and repair efforts.
