Notable Black cultural figures pass away in September 2026

Several notable figures in Black culture have passed away in September 2026.

Sister Betsy Jean Farrakhan, the 72-year-old eldest daughter of Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan, has died. She was a prominent figure within the organization, previously serving as Student National M. G. T. and G. C. C. Captain. Her work included supporting women and girls and initiatives in sustainable agriculture. She was a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Saviours’ Day in Detroit.

In sports, former New York Knicks lottery pick and Georgetown standout Michael Sweetney has died at age 43. Sweetney, who was the 2003 Big East Player of the Year, was selected ninth overall in the 2003 NBA Draft.

In music, Rosalind Ashford-Holmes, an original member of the Motown group Martha and the Vandellas, has died at age 83. The Detroit native passed away from natural causes in Redford, Michigan.
