Notary fees in the Netherlands face criticism in new study

A Radar Panel study involving nearly 10,000 respondents reveals significant dissatisfaction regarding notary services in the Netherlands. Approximately 60 percent of participants believe that notary fees are not in proportion to the services provided.

Furthermore, 10 percent of respondents encountered unexpected additional costs that were not included in the initial or advertised price. In many cases, these costs only became apparent during the process (47 percent) or after the invoice was issued (36 percent). One-third of those affected were charged more than 500 euros in extra fees, with one in eight facing costs exceeding 1,000 euros.

Jan Janssens, acting on behalf of the KNB, acknowledged that notaries are not always clear about these additional expenses. He stated that while quotes are based on initial client information, costs can rise if additional work is required, and emphasized that notaries must inform clients when such costs arise.

Regarding consumer behavior, the study found that trust (33 percent) and previous experience (31 percent) are the primary factors in choosing a notary, while price ranks fourth (26 percent). Some respondents reported feeling pressured by time, particularly during house purchases, leading them to accept unexpected costs to avoid delays.
