Nothing launches Nothing OS 5.0 based on Android 17

Nothing has officially unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, a major software update built on the Android 17 framework. The update introduces over 80 changes, focusing on a significant visual redesign, enhanced performance, and expanded artificial intelligence capabilities through tools like Essential AI.

Key design updates include the introduction of the Geist typeface, a new adaptive color system that tints icons and widgets based on wallpaper, and a refreshed user interface for the status bar, camera, and gallery. The update also features new widgets such as ‘Collector’ and ‘Away Time,’ and a dedicated app for the Glyph Interface.

The Open Beta program launched on August 26, starting with the Nothing Phone (3). However, the initial rollout faced technical hurdles as high demand led to server capacity issues and download error messages, which co-founder Akis Evangelidis confirmed the team is working to resolve.

The rollout schedule for stable releases varies by device. The Phone (3) is expected to receive the stable version in mid-October, followed by the Phone (4a) series and Phone (3a) models in early November. Other models, including the Phone (2a) series, are slated for updates in mid-November, with some later models arriving in early 2027. Notably, the Nothing Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 are not eligible for this update.
