Notre Dame football defense excels amid legislative developments

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team enters their matchup against North Carolina with a highly ranked defense. Currently 4-0, the team allows only 199.3 yards and 8.3 points per game, the lowest in the FBS. Defensive adjustments continue at the safety position, with Luke Talich returning to the starting lineup following an injury to Brauntae Johnson.

In legislative news, Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua played a role in the passage of the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA). The bill passed the Senate with a 77-22 margin and now moves to the House of Representatives. The legislation seeks to grant the NCAA a limited antitrust exemption regarding eligibility and transfer rules, while codifying regulations for name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. The bill faces opposition from labor groups and athlete organizations who argue it limits athlete rights without providing equal representation.

Additionally, the university is mourning the death of former team captain and offensive guard Timothy J. Scannell, who played for the program from 1981 to 1985.
