Notting Hill Carnival implements major security and road closure plans

Organisers, police, and City Hall have announced extensive security and logistical measures for the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival in West London. To address safety concerns following 528 arrests last year, the Metropolitan Police will deploy live facial recognition (LFR) and number plate recognition technology to identify wanted individuals. Additional security tactics include weapon sweeps, the use of knife arches, and increased uniformed patrols in local parks and town centres.

To manage the expected influx of millions of attendees, City Hall has provided an additional £4.6 million in funding. This has enabled the deployment of a record 3,000 stewards—double the usual amount—alongside specialist CCTV and a scaled-up control room.

Logistical disruptions will be significant, with over 100 roads scheduled for closure from Sunday morning through Tuesday. Access to the zone will be restricted to emergency services and pre-authorised vehicles, affecting even local residents. Transport for London (TfL) has also warned of widespread disruption across the Underground network during the bank holiday weekend.
