Nottingham attack inquiry: Student's death ‘potentially preventable’

A public inquiry into the June 2023 Nottingham attacks has heard that the death of 19-year-old student Barnaby Webber was ‘potentially preventable’. Expert testimony provided to the inquiry suggested that while responders provided compassionate care, the medical treatment administered at the scene could have been improved.

An expert panel, including consultant Dr. Claire Park, concluded that if volume resuscitation—the process of replacing body fluids—had been more aggressive, Mr. Webber might have survived the cardiac arrest he suffered during the incident.

The inquiry, which has heard from 164 witnesses over three months, is also examining systemic failings by police, mental health services, and other authorities. The attacks, carried out by Valdo Calocane, resulted in the deaths of Mr. Webber, fellow student Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and school caretaker Ian Coates.
