Nottingham City Council urges residents to join Help to Save savings scheme

Nottingham City Council is urging eligible residents to check their eligibility for the UK Government’s Help to Save scheme. The program allows people on low incomes – particularly those receiving Universal Credit – to open an account and save between £1 and £50 each month, with the government adding a 50 % bonus on the highest balance after two and four years. Savings can be made via debit card, standing order or bank transfer, and withdrawals are limited to transfers to a personal bank account. Councillor Neghat Khan, leader of the council, said the scheme “is a fantastic way for eligible Nottingham residents to build financial resilience and prepare for unexpected costs”. The scheme is promoted alongside the council’s Crisis and Resilience Fund, which also offers benefits checking, council tax support, housing assistance and energy advice to improve long‑term financial stability for residents.
