Nottingham plans city centre ban on balaclavas

Nottingham is preparing to become the first major UK city to implement a ban on face coverings, such as balaclavas, in its city centre. The proposal aims to prevent individuals from using masks to conceal their identities while engaging in criminal activity or anti-social behaviour.

Under the proposed measures, police and community protection officers would have the authority to request that individuals remove face coverings if there is a reasonable belief they are being used to hide an identity for illicit purposes. Those who refuse to comply could face fines ranging from £70 to £1,000. The ban would include exemptions for religious, cultural, health, work, weather, or personal safety reasons.

The initiative follows a public consultation that received over 2,000 responses, with early indications showing significant public support. Nottinghamshire Police reported that face coverings have become an intimidating factor for residents and visitors. Since May, the force has made 821 arrests in the city centre as part of ongoing efforts to combat anti-social behaviour.
