Nova Direita calls for increased policing in Madeira
The political group Nova Direita has raised concerns regarding the shortage of personnel within the Public Security Police (PSP) in Madeira. The party highlighted that during a recent morning shift in Funchal, only two officers were assigned to traffic control, with only three scheduled for the afternoon shift.
Regional coordinator Paulo Azevedo noted that these staffing levels are insufficient, particularly given the recent increase in fatal road accidents across the region. To address the issue, the party has proposed reassigning officers from administrative roles to active street duties where legally and operationally feasible.
Additionally, Nova Direita is calling for temporary cooperation with the National Republican Guard (GNR) to bolster road inspections and patrols throughout the summer. This request comes as the region prepares for numerous festivals and events that increase the demand for public security. Azevedo urged the PSP command to prioritize regional safety over institutional pride to ensure effective cooperation between security forces.
