Nova Željezara Zenica explosion and fire injures three workers
On June 25, a gas explosion occurred at the Energetika plant within Nova Željezara Zenica, a steel manufacturing complex in the Zenica‑Doboj canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The blast ignited a fire and prompted an immediate security lockdown. Three people were injured: two sustained minor injuries, while a third, Mirnes Kamerić, suffered serious injuries and was transferred to the University Clinical Center in Sarajevo’s intensive care unit.
A criminal investigation was launched by the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office, with forensic experts from the police criminal investigation department, fire protection inspectors, occupational safety inspectors, and a mechanical engineering specialist conducting on‑site examinations. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the explosion and any potential violations of safety regulations.
