Nova Gorica proposes cultural monument status for ‘Naš Tito’ inscription

A debate has emerged in Slovenia regarding a proposal by the Municipality of Nova Gorica to declare the stone inscription ‘Naš Tito’ (Our Tito) on Sabotin hill a local cultural monument. The initiative, supported by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Nova Gorica, aims to recognize the inscription as a historical landmark.

Proponents argue that Josip Broz Tito was a key historical figure in the National Liberation Struggle and played a significant role in Yugoslav and international politics. Conversely, opponents argue against the designation, citing the revolutionary violence and post-war killings associated with his regime. Critics suggest that honoring the figure disregards the victims of the regime and contradicts constitutional principles regarding the celebration of a regime established through human rights violations.
