Brazil: Municipalities offer free transit for 2026 elections

Various Brazilian municipalities are implementing measures to facilitate voter access for the 2026 elections. Following resolutions from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), several cities are offering free public transportation on election days to ensure citizens can reach polling stations.

In Nova Iguaçu, nearly 300 vehicles across 73 municipal lines will operate free of charge from 6h to 20h. Similarly, Rio de Janeiro will provide free access to municipal buses, BRT, and VLT, while also implementing traffic interdictions and special signal plans to manage flow. Other cities, including Sinop, Paranavaí, Uberlândia, and Maceió, have also announced free transit or increased fleet availability to support the democratic process.

In addition to transportation, local governments are addressing infrastructure and social issues. Nova Iguaçu has intensified road repair operations following heavy rainfall, and Mato Grosso is hosting symposia and webinars focused on longevity and the challenges of an aging population.
