Nova Iguaçu launches animal-assisted intervention program

The city of Nova Iguaçu has launched the ELO Program (Animal-Assisted Interventions), a pilot project designed to integrate animal interaction into public welfare policies. Created by the Municipal Secretariat for Animal Defense and Protection (SEMDEPA), the initiative aims to support inclusion, socialization, and emotional well-being.

During a recent session at Residência Inclusiva II, a facility managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance (SEMAS), dogs participated in activities with young people and adults living with various disabilities. The program uses planned, professional-led interventions to stimulate communication and cognitive skills in sectors including education, health, and social assistance.

To ensure safety, participating dogs undergo rigorous evaluations of their health, temperament, sociability, and behavioral balance. Marcelo Reis, the municipal secretary for animal defense, stated that the project demonstrates how animal welfare can contribute directly to human care and social assistance.
