Nova Iguaçu rehab center delivers prostheses to Baixada Fluminense patients

The Centro de Atenção em Saúde Funcional (Casf) in Nova Iguaçu handed out free prostheses, orthoses and orthopedic shoes to dozens of residents of the Baixada Fluminense region on Thursday and Friday (9‑10 May). The devices, produced in the centre’s own workshop, are provided at no cost by the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS).

Among the recipients was 67‑year‑old Clice Maria Lourenço, who lost her right leg due to diabetes complications and said the prosthesis was “the best present I have ever received”. Children also benefited: 13‑year‑old Miguel Santos received custom shoes to correct a leg‑length discrepancy, and 3‑year‑old Samuel Dias was fitted with a Batman‑themed orthosis to aid his cerebral palsy therapy.

Since its inception, Casf has supplied 62 prostheses and 312 orthoses, performed more than 40 000 attendances and around 143 000 procedures for eleven municipalities. Municipal health secretary Luiz Carlos Nobre Cavalcanti stressed that each device “gives a person the chance to walk, work, study and regain independence”.
