Nova Iguaçu restores historic Rio D’Ouro railway stations

The City of Nova Iguaçu has launched the ‘Estações da Cultura’ project to restore three historic buildings from the Rio D’Ouro Railway. Managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Culture, the initiative aims to transform these former stations into permanent centers for knowledge, education, and local history preservation.

The project focuses on the Tinguá, Rio D’Ouro, and Vila de Cava stations. The Tinguá station has already been fully restored and is open to the public, currently hosting exhibitions such as ‘Dadinho, o escultor das cidades imaginárias’ and a timeline of cordelista José Rodrigues de Oliveira. The Rio D’Ouro station is undergoing renovations with an expected completion in two months, while Vila de Cava is slated to be the next site for intervention.

Mayor Dudu Reina stated that the recovery of these sites is part of a broader effort to value the rich history of the former Vila de Iguassú region, following the inauguration of the state’s first Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
