Nova Iguaçu hosts over 300 seniors at traditional Arraiá celebration

On 15 July 2026, more than 300 elderly residents gathered at the Espaço Municipal da Terceira Idade (Esmuti) in Nova Iguaçu for the town’s traditional Arraiá festival. The event, organized by the municipal Social Assistance Secretariat (SEMAS), featured a two‑month rehearsal of a quadrilha, a staged June‑marriage ceremony, live music, typical foods and dancing, aiming to promote social interaction and active ageing.

Director Viviane Pereira said, “O Arraiá é um dos eventos mais aguardados do ano pelos nossos idosos.” Among the participants, 72‑year‑old Nilza Cardoso Soares, a long‑time Esmuti member undergoing cancer treatment, highlighted the supportive community, noting, “Aqui no Esmuti me sinto acolhida pelos amigos. A gente dança, se diverte, faz até fofocas.” The centre continues to offer health, cultural and leisure programmes, with open registration for residents aged 60 and over.
