Nova SBE study reveals gender gap in tourism leadership

A study titled ‘Women in Tourism Leadership: The Representation Gap’, developed by the Westmont Institute of Tourism & Hospitality at Nova SBE, reveals a significant gender disparity in the global tourism sector. While women comprise between 54% and 56% of the total tourism workforce, their presence diminishes sharply as they ascend the corporate hierarchy.

According to data cited in the report, including findings from Aptamind and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), only 20% of women hold C-suite administrative positions, and just 7% reach top management roles. This inequality extends to compensation; the 2023 C&M’s Travel Gender Pay Gap Index indicates that salary differences between men and women in executive positions can reach as high as 38.45%.

The research utilized a systemic mapping methodology, analyzing over 60 academic and institutional studies, conducting interviews with industry leaders, and comparing international equality initiatives across more than ten countries. To address these challenges, the study proposes systemic changes, such as performance-based promotions rather than hours-based assessments, ensuring professional reintegration after maternity leave, and establishing mentorship networks.
