Nova Scotia Energy Minister Marco MacLeod resigns over rap lyrics

Nova Scotia Energy Minister Marco MacLeod has resigned from his cabinet position following controversy over rap songs released in 2013. The lyrics, which contained misogynistic language and references to cocaine use, were flagged by advocacy groups, including Adsum House, as harmful to women.

Premier Tim Houston accepted the resignation on Wednesday night, stating that MacLeod felt his actions had become a distraction from government work. While MacLeod has since removed the songs from streaming platforms and expressed regret, the Premier noted that the former minister's decision followed weeks of meetings with women’s advocacy groups aimed at taking accountability.

Tim Houston will personally resume oversight of the energy portfolio. The Premier indicated he would not participate in political “pile-ons” regarding the matter when the legislature resumes next week.
