Nova Scotia mass shooting oversight committee releases final report

The committee responsible for monitoring the implementation of recommendations from the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting inquiry has released its third and final annual report. Committee chair Myra Freeman noted that while progress has been made on 90 recommendations, significant work remains regarding police reform, community safety, and addressing gender-based and intimate partner violence.

The Mass Casualty Commission originally issued 130 non-binding recommendations in March 2023, approximately half of which pertain to policing. Freeman emphasized that many of these issues require long-term societal changes and complex responses that extend beyond the committee’s three-year mandate. She stated that the responsibility for continuing this work now rests with the RCMP and the governments of Nova Scotia and Canada.

Despite the conclusion of the oversight mandate, Freeman highlighted improvements in emergency preparedness, such as the implementation of mobile emergency alerts. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston stated that the government accepts the responsibility to carry the work forward, acknowledging the dedication shown in the report.
