Nova Scotia Minister Marco MacLeod faces resignation calls

Nova Scotia Energy Minister Marco MacLeod is facing calls for his resignation following the resurfacing of a rap song he recorded in 2013. The track, titled ‘Meadowville’, has drawn intense criticism from gender-based violence advocates and members of the public who describe the lyrics as misogynistic, degrading to women, and containing references to illegal substances.

Liz LeClair, a gender-based violence advocate, expressed concerns regarding whether survivors of intimate partner violence could trust a politician whose past work contained such content. While some have defended MacLeod by noting the music was released over a decade ago, many advocates argue his apology is insufficient.

MacLeod issued a handwritten apology on social media, stating, ‘I apologize for my words from 13 years ago’ and expressing a commitment to combating misogyny in all its forms. He also stated he was sorry to anyone who felt ‘small, degraded or upset’ by the lyrics.
