Nova Scotia NDP proposes healthcare reforms amid specialist wait times
The Nova Scotia NDP has held a news conference to highlight severe delays in the province’s healthcare system, featuring testimonies from women struggling to access specialist care. One Halifax resident, Haley Smith, reported being told she might wait up to five years to see a gynecologist despite suffering from fibroids, cysts, and adenomyosis for over 130 days.
In response to these challenges, NDP Leader Claudia Chender announced plans to force a legislative debate on three proposed bills. The legislation aims to improve healthcare oversight and access, including a requirement for the government to create a plan with measurable targets to reduce emergency room wait times. Other proposed measures include providing free access to birth control, hormone therapy, and in vitro fertilization, as well as reinstating an independent board to oversee health spending and decisions.
