Nova Scotia opposition demands debate over $10B AI data centre

Nova Scotia opposition leaders are calling for an emergency legislative debate following the announcement of a $10-billion AI data centre project in Cape Breton. The facility, to be owned by EverWind Fuels and leased to U.S.-based AI company Anthropic, is planned for Point Tupper and is expected to be completed in two stages by 2028.

NDP Leader Claudia Chender and Liberal MLA Becky Druhan have criticized Premier Tim Houston for a lack of public consultation and regulatory safeguards. The opposition argues that the government is relying on non-binding federal guidelines rather than formal provincial laws to manage the project's impact on electricity rates, water usage, and local communities.

Public opposition is growing, evidenced by a Change.org petition that has garnered over 12,000 signatures. While Premier Houston has stated that any such facility must meet or exceed federal standards for responsible development and must not increase power rates for residents, critics maintain that the project requires more rigorous legislative oversight.
