Novak Djokovic claims Australian Open deportation was political
In his new documentary, Novak Djokovic claims his 2022 deportation from Australia was politically motivated rather than a purely medical or administrative matter. The tennis star recalled the experience of being taken from the normal immigration process upon arrival in Melbourne, stating he immediately sensed something was wrong.
Djokovic, who maintains that vaccination should be a personal choice and a matter of bodily autonomy, faced significant career consequences due to his refusal to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. While he had been granted a medical exemption, Australian authorities ultimately cancelled his visa. Former officials, including then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, maintained that no special rules would apply to the athlete and expressed concerns that his presence could foster anti-vaccination sentiment.
The dispute prevented Djokovic from defending his title at the Australian Open, a tournament he has won nine times. Following his deportation, Rafael Nadal went on to win the event.
