Novak Djokovic faces retirement questions amid internal struggles

Novak Djokovic is facing increasing scrutiny regarding his potential retirement as he approaches 40 years of age. In the Amazon documentary ‘Novak Djokovic, the Wolf in Winter’, tennis legend Andre Agassi advised the Serbian player to consider retiring sooner rather than later to avoid letting the sport consume his life. Agassi noted that while tennis provides success, it ‘takes your childhood’ and suggested that retiring would allow Djokovic to focus on raising his children without professional preoccupations.

Djokovic has expressed internal struggles regarding his longevity and self-doubt. Despite holding a record-tying 24 Grand Slam singles titles, he admitted to feeling as though he is ‘imprisoning’ himself through his constant drive to be better, faster, and stronger. He described himself as his own ‘number one doubter.’

His wife, Jelena, noted that Djokovic carries a burden of feeling as though he is never enough, regardless of his achievements. The documentary also touches upon the formative experiences of his youth in Belgrade, including the impact of the 1999 NATO bombings, which shaped his early development and approach to the sport.
