Novak Djokovic to play Cincinnati Open ahead of US Open

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic, age 39 and currently world No. 5, announced he will compete at the Cincinnati Open from 13 to 23 August 2024. It will be his first appearance at the Masters 1000 event since winning the title in 2023, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz 5‑7, 7‑6(9/7), 7‑6(7/4) in a three‑hour‑49‑minute final.

Djokovic said the tournament is a crucial hard‑court tune‑up before the US Open, where he hopes to claim a record 25th Grand Slam title and move past Margaret Court on the all‑time list. He has been selective this season, playing only Indian Wells and the Rome Open before withdrawing from the Canadian Open, and he reached the Australian Open final and the Wimbledon semifinal (lost to Jannik Sinner). The Cincinnati field also includes rivals Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

The Serbian hopes the event will give him match sharpness while preserving his body ahead of the final Grand Slam of the year.
