Novak Djokovic targets US Open records as he recalls first ATP title

Twenty years ago, Novak Djokovic captured his first ATP title at the Dutch Open in Amersfoort, Netherlands, beating Chilean Nicolás Massú 7‑6(5), 6‑4. At 19 years and 32 days old, he was presented with a cassette player instead of a traditional cup; the device is now displayed in his tennis complex in Belgrade.

Heading into this year’s US Open, the Serbian world No. 1 could set several tournament milestones. A victory would make him the oldest champion, breaking William Larned’s 1911 record. He also stands to overtake Jimmy Connors for most match appearances (currently 110) and most wins (Connors’ 98) at the event, as he already holds 95 US Open victories.
