Novara officials address public security and environmental enforcement

In Novara, local political discussions are focusing on public security and environmental accountability. Mayor Alessandro Canelli has signaled a shift toward a harder line on crime, supporting a national resolution to expand the ‘Strade Sicure’ operation. This initiative aims to increase the number of military personnel stationed in public squares and transit hubs, potentially including Novara among the provincial capitals receiving armed presences.

Separately, former municipal councilor Michele Contartese has proposed a new approach to environmental violations. Noting that many administrative fines for illegal waste dumping or public space degradation go unpaid due to offenders lacking traceable assets, Contartese suggests a transition toward restorative justice. He proposes that municipalities implement regulations allowing offenders to compensate the community through public utility work, such as cleaning streets, parks, and removing micro-dumps, rather than relying solely on ineffective monetary sanctions.
