Novara submits revised Piazza Martiri redevelopment plan amid political debate

The redevelopment project for Piazza Martiri in Novara has reached a critical stage involving both technical revisions and political debate. The municipality has submitted an updated executive project to the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape. This revised version integrates new paving plans with a second phase of interventions, incorporating adjustments necessitated by archaeological findings and hydraulic stability requirements.

Key technical changes include maintaining an octagonal flowerbed around the Vittorio Emanuele II monument to preserve the historical layout of the Castle and ensure proper water drainage. The project also utilizes local stones, Luserna stone, and granite to meet conservation standards.

Simultaneously, political tension has risen regarding the project's methodology. Mario Iacopino, the leader of the Movimento 5 Stelle group, has issued an open letter to Mayor Alessandro Canelli. While supporting the pedestrianization of the square, Iacopino is calling for immediate public consultation to address citizen concerns expressed on social media, including worries about the loss of green space, excessive cementification, and pedestrian safety.
