Italy faces research funding crisis and healthcare innovation gaps

Experts and industry leaders are highlighting critical challenges within the Italian healthcare and research sectors. Massimo Andreoni, a professor at Tor Vergata University, warned that Italian research is suffering due to low investment, noting that Italy allocates only 1.37% of its GDP to research compared to the European average of 2.1%. This funding shortage threatens Italy's scientific standing in fields like oncology and infectiology and drives young researchers to work abroad.

In response to systemic hurdles, Novartis has launched the Catalyst project to strengthen the clinical research ecosystem, specifically targeting pilot programs in Lombardy, Veneto, Tuscany, and Campania. The initiative aims to overcome bureaucratic obstacles and personnel shortages that hinder the integration of clinical studies into hospital workflows.

Additionally, Gilead Sciences reported investing over 18 million euros over 15 years through its fellowship programs to support public-private research collaborations. Meanwhile, patient advocates and health officials emphasized the need to shift from viewing prevention as a cost to treating it as a vital investment, noting that many Italians recognize the value of prevention but fail to maintain regular medical screenings.
