Novartis signs $7.8 billion mRNA therapy deal with Abogen

Novartis has entered into a licensing agreement with Chinese biotechnology firm Abogen Biosciences worth up to $7.8 billion to develop messenger RNA (mRNA) based therapies. The deal grants Novartis exclusive rights to the experimental drug ABO2203, which aims to treat autoimmune diseases by targeting the destruction of B lymphocytes.

Under the terms of the agreement, Abogen will receive an upfront payment of $575 million. The remaining potential $7.2 billion is contingent upon the drug successfully advancing through development stages, achieving regulatory approval, and meeting specific commercialization milestones.

This acquisition follows recent scrutiny of Novartis’s dealmaking strategy after late-stage trial failures in September impacted its market value. The company stated that Abogen’s RNA technology complements its existing portfolio for autoimmune disease treatments. The transaction also highlights the increasing role of Chinese biotech companies as sources of innovation for global pharmaceutical corporations.
