Sergei Sokolov, editor of Novaya Gazeta, detained by Russian authorities
Sergei Sokolov, the editor-in-chief of the independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta, was detained by authorities on Thursday, October 15, 2026, following a search of his residence. Sokolov was taken to the Investigative Committee in Moscow for questioning.
Authorities indicated the investigation is related to the illegal use and storage of personal data. Sokolov was questioned as a witness in a case involving another Novaya Gazeta journalist, Oleg Roldugin, who was arrested in April and is currently under house arrest. The investigation into Roldugin could potentially lead to up to six years in prison.
Sokolov has since been released from the Investigative Committee and has returned to the newsroom. Reporters Without Borders condemned the incident, describing it as part of the continuous pressure exerted by the Kremlin on independent journalism in Russia.
