Novaya Opera/Balet Moskva performs war-themed Nutcracker in Istanbul
The Novaya Opera/Balet Moskva production, ‘The Nutcracker: This is Not a Fairy Tale’, was performed at the Atatürk Kültür Merkezi (AKM) Türk Telekom Opera Hall in Istanbul. While utilizing Tchaikovsky’s original musical notes, the production reimagines the classic ballet through the lens of World War I.
Award-winning choreographer and director Pavel Glukhov explained that the concept of transforming a fairy tale into an adult war narrative was inspired by cinema, specifically Abel Gance’s film ‘J’accuse’. The production explores psychological trauma by depicting the main character at different stages of life, showing an adult version of Nathaniel attempting to process past pain.
Glukhov noted the technical challenge of maintaining Tchaikovsky’s musical dramaturgy while implementing a new dramatic flow. He emphasized the difficulty of integrating a new plot into existing musical structures, such as ensuring that traditionally cheerful dances, like the Gigue, contributed to the evolving dramatic narrative.
