Novi Ligure steel plant faces production halt by mid-November
The Acciaierie d'Italia (formerly Ilva) steel plant in Novi Ligure is facing a critical production stoppage, expected to occur between mid and late November once current raw material stocks are exhausted. This shutdown threatens the employment of approximately 515 workers out of a total workforce of 540, who would likely transition to redundancy funds (cassa integrazione).
While commissioners are negotiating the purchase of 10,000 tons of coils to arrive by February, this amount is estimated to provide only 15 to 30 days of production, failing to offer a structural solution for operational continuity. Local institutions and unions are demanding a more consistent order plan to ensure job security and have requested protection for approximately 70 indirect workers linked to the facility.
In response to the crisis, the Novi Ligure City Council held an open session at the Museo dei Campionissimi to discuss the economic implications for the local community and the future of the site.
