Novi Sad commemorates 23 months since fatal railway station canopy collapse

Citizens and student groups in Serbia held commemorations to mark 23 months since the collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station, an incident that killed 16 people and injured one other on November 1, 2024.

In Novi Sad, hundreds of people participated in a silent commemorative walk from Liman Park through Bulevar Oslobodjenja to the railway station. Participants observed 16 minutes of silence at 11:52 AM and laid flowers and candles at the site of the tragedy. The event was organized by the Novi Sad Assemblies Network.

In Prokuplje, the Citizens' Assembly organized a gathering at the Basic Court to honor the victims. Organizers highlighted that no one has been officially convicted for the loss of life and called for transparency regarding suspicions of corruption related to the station's reconstruction. The tragedy has since sparked widespread student protests and civil demonstrations across Serbia demanding accountability and access to documentation regarding the station's construction.
