Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić Faces Mass Protests in Novi Sad

On Saturday, 20 June, thousands of citizens gathered in Novi Sad, Serbia's second‑largest city, to protest against President Aleksandar Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party. The demonstration commemorated the November 2024 roof collapse at the city’s railway station that killed 16 people and was presented by activists as a symptom of broader government mismanagement, corruption and electoral fraud.

The protest, organized by university students and joined by civic groups and ordinary residents, demanded early, free and fair parliamentary elections, possibly before the scheduled 2027 vote. Demonstrators also called for reforms of the media, police and judiciary, and for Serbia to meet European Union rule‑of‑law requirements on its accession path. Vučić responded on television, urging his supporters to gather on 27 June and hinting that elections could be called in the coming months.

The rally is the latest in a series of anti‑government actions that have spread across Serbia, signalling growing political pressure on Vučić’s 13‑year rule.
