Novi Sad shelter collapse: Court extends detention for four suspects
The High Court in Novi Sad has extended the house arrest of four individuals involved in the legal proceedings regarding the canopy collapse at the Novi Sad railway station. Jelena Tanasković, Milan Spremić, Marina Gavrilović, and Dejan Todorović will remain under house arrest for an additional three months.
However, the court did not extend these restrictions for former Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Goran Vesić or his former deputy, Anita Dimoski. Defense attorney Veljko Milić noted that the court's decision did not provide reasons for why the measure was not applied to Vesić and Dimoski, highlighting what he described as an unequal position between the defendants.
The canopy collapse, which occurred on November 1, 2024, resulted in the deaths of 16 people, including children, and left one person seriously injured. The tragedy has triggered widespread protests across Serbia demanding accountability and transparency regarding the reconstruction of the railway station.
