Novo Nordisk begins Phase 3 trial for lower-dose Wegovy pill

Novo Nordisk has launched a Phase 3 clinical trial to determine the lowest effective dose of its oral Wegovy (semaglutide) pill for weight management. The study, which is expected to run until 2028, involves 450 adults with a BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 if accompanied by other health conditions.

The trial design compares two unspecified lower doses against a placebo over a 60-week period. This research follows high demand for lower-dosage options, particularly among self-paying patients in the United States, where lower doses are significantly less expensive than higher ones.

Following its market entry in the U.S. earlier this year, the Wegovy pill generated approximately $500 million in revenue during the second quarter, up from $350 million in the first quarter. The medication is also available in the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
