Novo Nordisk faces intense competition in obesity drug market

Novo Nordisk is navigating a challenging period as it faces increased competition and market shifts in the obesity and diabetes sectors. While demand for its Wegovy and Ozempic treatments remains high, the company has seen its shares decline by approximately one-third over the past year. This downturn is attributed to the rise of American rival Eli Lilly, whose drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound have gained significant market share in the United States due to superior trial results.

Additional pressures include the emergence of cheaper generic and compounded versions of obesity drugs in markets such as India and Canada, as well as production shortages during peak demand. While some analysts view the company’s current valuation as a potential buying opportunity—noting a price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 14 compared to Eli Lilly’s 34—investors remain cautious. Future growth is heavily dependent on the success of the company’s pipeline, specifically the next-generation drug CagriSema and the development of oral weight-loss pills.
