Novo Nordisk unveils 2030 growth strategy amid patent concerns

Novo Nordisk faces investor skepticism following its Capital Markets Day in London, where the company unveiled a long-term growth strategy aimed at offsetting the upcoming patent expiration of semaglutide. The drug, used in Wegovy and Ozempic, is expected to lose patent protection in the US and Europe in the early 2030s.

To counter this, CEO Mike Doustdar announced plans to launch more than five multi-blockbuster drugs by 2030 and target over DKK 150 billion in risk-adjusted pipeline sales by 2035. The company is also focusing on expanding its oral GLP-1 capacity and diversifying into other therapeutic areas. Clinical data for the next-generation combination therapy, CagriSema, showed significant weight loss results in Phase 3 trials, including a 21% reduction in the REDEFINE 9 study.

Despite these ambitions, Novo Nordisk shares fell as much as 9% as analysts expressed concerns regarding pricing power, margin stability, and the company's ability to compete with rivals like Eli Lilly. Additionally, the company confirmed that restructuring efforts have resulted in a total workforce reduction of 13,000 employees from its peak.
