Novo Nordisk Foundation funds 200 million DKK kidney research project

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded 200 million DKK over five years to KidMED-CKM, a new European research consortium focused on kidney research. The project aims to investigate the interconnected roles of the kidneys in the development of cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and severe obesity.

Coordinated by the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, the consortium brings together prominent research environments in Hamburg, Aarhus, and Aachen. The initiative seeks to shift medical approaches from treating late-stage complications to earlier diagnosis and more personalized, individual treatments by understanding the biological mechanisms linking these conditions.

Aarhus University will play a central role, with Professors Rikke Nørregaard and Henrik Birn leading the Danish portion of the project. This segment will focus on kidney physiology, population studies, and education, including the establishment of a European educational platform for future kidney researchers and clinicians.
