Novo Nordisk introduces new obesity treatments in the Dominican Republic

Novo Nordisk announced the launch of two semaglutide‑based obesity medicines in the Dominican Republic. The company unveiled Wegovy® (semaglutide 2.4 mg) as a new injectable option for adults with obesity or overweight plus comorbidities, citing clinical trials that show sustained weight loss and a 20 % reduction in major cardiovascular events when used as part of a comprehensive medical approach. At the same time, Novo Nordisk highlighted its oral GLP‑1 pill, an FDA‑approved formulation of semaglutide that achieved an average 17 % weight loss over 64 weeks in trials and generated more than 500,000 prescriptions in the United States within two months of launch. Company executives emphasized that obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease and promoted the Novo te Cuida programme to provide nutritional guidance, health education, emotional support and easier access to the treatments. The rollout comes as approximately 68 % of Dominican adults are overweight and one‑third are obese, posing a major public‑health and economic challenge for the country.
