Novo Nordisk pursues longevity and aesthetic medicine as it diversifies beyond obesity drugs

Danish pharmaceutical group Novo Nordisk, the maker of diabetes and obesity treatments such as Wegovy and Ozempic, has seen its share price drop after a period of rapid growth, prompting investors to question the company’s heavy reliance on weight‑loss medicines, which account for more than 90 % of revenue. CEO Mike Doustdar said the firm is expanding its portfolio toward lifespan‑extending and aesthetic therapies, citing research presented at the American Diabetes Association conference that suggests semaglutide may protect the kidneys, liver and heart and lower biological age, potentially independent of weight loss. The strategy aims to reduce risk and broaden the product base, contrasting with rivals like Eli Lilly that already hold more diversified pipelines. Market observers note the stock fell about 12.7 % amid competitive pressure and pricing concerns, while the company invests in new delivery forms and explores applications such as hair‑loss and skin treatments.
