Novo Nordisk lifts outlook as oral Wegovy sales boost earnings

Novo Nordisk reported second‑quarter adjusted operating profit of 33.4 billion Danish crowns, up 11 % year‑on‑year, and beat analysts’ forecasts. The company raised its full‑year profit and sales outlook, citing strong demand for the oral Wegovy weight‑loss pill that launched in the United States in January. Wegovy’s performance helped lift the share price about 35 % from its March low and supports a broader recovery after two years of profit warnings, leadership changes and a 9,000‑job restructuring.

The Danish group also disclosed a non‑cash impairment related to the failed Phase‑3 ZEUS study of the experimental drug Ziltivekimab, which did not meet its primary cardiovascular endpoint. In parallel, Novo Nordisk sued Eli Lilly in a U.S. federal court, accusing the rival of false advertising over its obesity‑drug marketing. Lilly, which still leads the U.S. injectable weight‑loss market, denied the allegations. Analysts estimate the U.S. obesity‑drug market could exceed $100 billion by the end of the decade, making the rivalry a key focus for investors ahead of earnings releases on August 5.
