Novo Nordisk shifts Wegovy marketing following FDA warnings
Novo Nordisk is facing scrutiny over its marketing strategies for Wegovy. The company has increasingly transitioned to describing Wegovy users as “customers” rather than “patients” and has begun labeling the drug as a “weight loss” treatment on its website, moving away from terms like “anti-obesity” or “weight management” medicine.
This shift follows warnings from the FDA, which previously flagged television advertisements for being false or misleading. The agency specifically objected to slogans such as “live lighter,” stating they implied greater weight loss than other approved GLP-1 drugs without sufficient data. The FDA also noted that such advertising could improperly position the drug as a solution to broad life challenges rather than a medical treatment for a specific condition.
Financially, Novo Nordisk maintains a market capitalization of approximately $172.11 billion. While analysts remain divided on the stock—with Deutsche Bank recently reiterating a “sell” rating and others providing “hold” or “buy” ratings—the company continues to navigate a competitive landscape against rivals like Eli Lilly.
